Unboxing the Bambaw 750ml insulated bottle and first impressions.

We were excited to receive the Bambaw Reusable Stainless Steel Water Bottle in the post from the fantastic UK based ‘Ethical Superstore’. After removing the box from the ‘Jiffy Green’ recycled paper envelope from the supplier, we were instantly struck by Bambaws’ minimal and 100% plastic free, recyclable packaging. This was made entirely from cardboard (also most cardboard is now made from a high percentage of recycled paper).

We were very happy to see that this contained only a minimal amount of non glossy print/branding. On opening the box and removing the bottle we were instantly struck by the simplistic beauty and finish of the natural bamboo lid and the spotless brushed finish to the stainless steel.

On tipping up the empty box and expecting to find a bumf of instruction leaflets and guarantee information we were surprised to find nothing fell out at all! A closer inspection of the box revealed a QR code which when scanned took us to the Bambaw website where we could download the manual to our phones thus creating zero unnecessary waste!

How well is the Bambaw drinks bottle constructed and from what materials?

This bottle is both lightweight and easy to carry due to its sturdy steel handle and slightly grippy brushed finish. Upon opening the Bambaw steel bottle we found that the lid unscrewed with minimal effort with the help of the rock solid steel carry handle revealing what can only be described as a bulletproof heavy duty screw mechanism which oozes longevity.

The bottle is kept water tight with a silicone ‘o’ ring that sits discreetly just under the top of the lid and fits well enough to install confidence that its not going to accidentally come loose.

The top of the lid is finished in eye catching bamboo, with a beautiful Bambaw logo engraving.

The space inside looks vast, they really have packed the 750ml in and one is left wondering how its double skinned vacuum construction is going to bear up against a traditional thermos flask with their classic bulky exterior and relatively small internal capacity.

What are Bambaw's product claims about the stainless steel bottle?

Before we go onto our product test let’s have a look at the product claims that Bambaw are making about this steel bottle. Taken from the Bambaw website, the company make the following claims about their 750ml stainless steel bottle:

The insulated bottle from Bambaw has a sleek and elegant stainless-steel design. The bottle is free of any paint, ensuring scratch resistance. The unique design is topped off with a bamboo lid. The neutral design makes the reusable water bottle ideal for work, hiking, yoga, travelling and all everyday activities.
Double wall insulation
The reusable water bottle can keep your drinks hot for 12 hours and cool for 24 hours. The opening is wide enough for ice cubes or a tea infuser, making it ideal for all hot and cool drinks. You can also add fruits for a more refreshing summer beverage. After finishing it, you can easily clean the insulated bottle with a bottle brush.
BPA-free water bottle
Plastic leaches harmful BPA and other chemicals into your drink. This is linked to several long-term health effects. The stainless-steel bottle is completely safe as no plastic is in touch with the water.

We test and review the Bambaw 750ml Stainless Steel Bottle

We gave the Bambaw drinks bottle to one of our Plastic Free Shopper’s to test, below is their honest opinion of the Bambaw bottle.

Does the Bambaw steel bottle keep drinks cold?

After a quick initial clean using a tiny amount of bar soap and a thorough rinse, I then filled the flask with beautifully filtered cool water from a sink based home water filter, I took the Bambaw water bottle out for its first excursion. This included a journey by car to a train station and then a bus journey to visit family.

After about an hour the feeling of thirst arose and I reached for the steel Bambaw water bottle. After opening the top with ease I was pleasantly surprised that the water tasted as pure, and was as cool as if it had just left the tap. It appeared to have picked up no metallic or other unwanted tastes from being in contact with the bottle which is often the case when using a reusable plastic bottle.

The cool temperature remained the same as I sipped the water during the hour long train journey and I realised just how 750ml was actually a reasonably substantial amount of water and an adequate amount to take on a 2hour journey!

Oops we dropped it! Is the Bambaw bottle built to last?

Whilst on the train I actually believe the Bambaw bottle was receiving some admiring looks from other passengers with its simple, elegant and functional design.

The last leg of my journey was by bus, as I took my seat and the bus drove off I again reached for the stainless steel bottle. Just as I pulled it out of my bag the bus hit a bump in the road and the bottle slipped out of my hands with a load crash when it hit the floor.

Upon hurriedly picking it up again half expecting to find at least a small mark or dent in the bottle I was very impressed to find it completely unmarked and as good as new. This bottle really is built to last!

The final few sips of water were just as cool and refreshing as when I first set out and I was really pleased with the way the bottle had performed.

Does the insulated Bambaw bottle keep drinks hot for 12hrs?

To see how the Bambaw Stainless steel water bottle coped with keeping hot drinks hot, I decided to test the advertised time of it keeping drinks hot for 12 hours. Waking up in the early morning and whilst brewing my morning cuppa I with some nice loose mint tea I made sure I made enough to fill the 750ml Bambaw bottle to the very top.

Once the lid was closed I looked at my watch it was 7.30am and placed the Bambaw steel bottle in my day pack and went off to work. The temperature outside was a typical October 14 degrees and the flask sat in this temperature for most of the time in an unheated store room for most of the day.

Once home I waited until 7.30pm to first open the bottle to see if the Bambaw bottles performance claims were true. Upon opening the beautifully crafted bamboo top with its engraved Bambaw logo, I was greeted with a puff of steam from the tea and a beautiful minty aroma.

Pouring the tea out of the steel bottle into a cup and taking a sip, I was pleased to find the temperature of the tea to be not just acceptable, but actually pretty hot. In fact the perfect temperature to drink! I closed the lid of the Bambaw bottle again and waited for another few hours.

At 10.30pm just before bed I opened the bottle again to find the tea still very warm and just about at a temperature where it could still be enjoyed. The Bambaw stainless steel bottle really did live up to and far surpass its advertised temperature holding capabilities!

How to clean the inside of the stainless steel water bottle?

Thanks to the Bambow 750ml bottle’s wide mouth and simple design, cleaning for the next round of hot drinks was an easy task. By just rinsing in hot water and having a look inside I could see no discolouration or stains. With the use of a handy bottle brush, no further cleaning was necessary.

However, if black tea or coffee is left in a stainless steel bottle for a prolonged time then what appears to be dark staining can appear inside the bottle. This is just a residue from the tannin in the drink, and can be easily cleaned by filling the bottle with hot water and a few tea spoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda. Leave the lid on over night and in the morning the residue should have disappeared.

Overall opinion of the Bambaw stainless steel water bottle?

This was a truly great drinks bottle, it was both very impressive in looks and function and a pleasure to use and carry around with me. It was really well constructed and felt like it would even outlive me, even with minimal care!

Were there any negatives?

Well the only negative we could find, and it is being quite picky as it’s such a small part of a product which can be reused for years to come,is the silicone ‘o’ ring used to seal the bottle.

Whilst not strictly speaking a pure plastic, silicone is a man-made substance which won’t biodegrade quickly. We would like to see an alternative material used as a seal on these and other stainless steel bottles. How about natural rubber?

In conclusion, the Bambaw 750ml Stainless Steel Bottle test results...

To sum up our experience with the 750 ml Bambaw stainless steel water bottle we would honestly say it far exceeded our expectations both in performance and the simplicity of its design. It was extremely well made, using no plastic (apart from the silicone ‘o’ ring) in its construction or its packaging, which was kept to a minimum whilst still protecting the product.

The Bambaw water bottle won us over as admirers of its looks, low price point, portability and its great performance and we would highly recommend anyone looking for a reusable drinking bottle for everyday use to buy.

Rugged in design and construction, weather keeping drinks hot or cold, this Bambaw stainless steel water bottle really should last a lifetime and vastly reduce one’s consumption of single-use plastic!

Is Gum Biodegradable? Plastic-free Gum Guide

What is chewing gum made of? What exactly am I chewing here?

Its is estimated that over 374 trillion sticks of chewing gum are produced each year, with over 100’000 tonnes of gum being consumed worldwide. That’s one heck of big sticky lump of used chewing gum disappearing somewhere into our environment on an annual basis!

But have you ever stopped to think about whats actually in that rubbery feeling substance that we just pop into our mouths on a daily basis, or why that gum seems to literally ‘stick’ around forever on the pavements and sidewalks?

So lets now have a look at answering the question.. Is gum biodegradable? And if not, then is gum really made from plastic and where can I get plastic-free gum?

Chewing gum ingredients: A quick history of gum.

Chewing gum first developed in the United states from an American Indian custom of chewing on sweetened tree resin. As the custom was taken on by western civilisation, this resin was replaced by a natural form of rubber called Chicle. However, as the popularity of gum increased in the 1960s, this rubber was replaced with a synthetic version which was cheaper to manufacture and is still used in most chewing gums today.

Most modern chewing gums have what’s known as a gum base which makes up the majority of the chewing gum. This synthetic rubbery substance is commonly made from ingredients including:

Butadiene-styrene rubber Isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (butyl rubber)
Paraffin (via the Fischer-Tropsch process)
Petroleum wax
Polyethylene
Polyisobutylene
Polyvinyl acetate

This synthetic plastic/rubber gum base is mixed with sweeteners and flavourings to make up regular chewing gum as we know it. Ingredients such as Polyethylene and Polyvinyl acetate are both common forms of plastic. Polyethylene is found in items such as plastic bottles and food containers, and Polyvinyl acetate is used in glues and adhesives. Does gum biodegrade after its been chewed?

So now we know that chewing gum is made up of a type of synthetic plastic rubber, will it biodegrade after we have chewed it? In a word NO! or not for a very long time.

Chewing gum being made up of mostly plastic will, like many other plastics, take a very long time to completely break down. How long? Well nobody really knows, but we could be talking thousands of years. That’s a long time to be hanging around in the environment with the possibility of causing problems to wildlife both on the land and in our oceans.

What problems are caused by discarded gum?

The amount of gum which is not being disposed of in the correct manner, by namely throwing it into the garbage can, is estimated at being around 80% to 90% of all the gum being consumed. So with 100’000 tonnes per year being chewed that’s up to 90’000 tones going straight into the environment!

As many people don’t even realise that most chewing gums are made from plastic, then even people who are environmentally concerned and would never dream of throwing away litter wouldn’t think twice about spitting out their gum discreetly in the grass at the side of the road or burying it in the sand on the beach. Obviously this discarded gum can go on to be eaten by animals or get into the food chain as it slowly breaks down.

Another main problem associated with gum which is non-biodegradable is when people discard their gum on the floor of cities, cinemas, theatres, historic buildings, sports stadiums and music venues. Here it soon forms a bond with whatever it sticks to and proves to be extremely hard to remove. In the city of Dublin in Ireland alone it was estimated to have cost the council around 250’000 Euros to clean the city of discarded gum, And that’s just the gum from the pavements and hard surfaces.

Chewing gum litter became such a problem in the country of Singapore that they actually banned chewing gum sales in 1992. This was held in place until 2004 and was eventually revised to allow the sale of chewing gum for health reasons only. Strict rules on the sale of gum currently remain in place today.

Ok so there's plastic in gum, but is there a natural plastic free gum I can chew which doesn't cause pollution?

Well its good news! There are a few companies out there who are either still making natural gum, or are new companies making natural biodegradable plastic free gum.

These environmentally friendly gums have a gum base made from a natural product which is harvested from trees in Mesoamerica called ‘Chicle’. When Chewed and discarded it will soon dry and turn into a natural harmless powder.

If people switched to these natural forms of plastic free gum then it would stop the problems associated with the regular discarded gum in our towns and city’s as well as reduce the amount of plastic waste which is causing such damage to wildlife and our environment.

What's the problem with plastic anyway and why start living plastic free?

Many people are striving to master the art of plastic free living all over the world, and why not? Our ancestors and even to a certain extent the generation of our grandparents and great grandparents managed just fine without the need to purchase, use and discard plastic in the name of convenience.

Well we if we look at the items above, possibly minus the toothbrush if you like, then that’s not really much to carry with us at all. But if we would all just start carrying these reusable items around with us and making use of them daily then the amount of throw away single-use plastic entering our environment would drop massively overnight.

So in conclusion, why delay? We need to stop to this habit of relying on convenience, quit our laziness and go and get a nice fashionable preferably plastic free bag, fill it with some essential reusable items, and START PLASTIC FREE LIVING TODAY!!

How to drink coffee without leaving a plastic footprint?

Billions of people around the world enjoy coffee on a daily basis, in fact according to the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), its about 1.4 billion cups of coffee a day worldwide. The United States is thought to be the biggest consumer of coffee however many other countries have a higher average intake per person with Scandinavian countries such as Finland coming out on top.

We have seen the news, stood with jaw dropped at the images in the media, and been through the anger and emotions that come with waking up to the devastation that plastic pollution is having on our environment. So how to stop using plastic and work towards decreasing the size of our plastic footprint in order to play our part in cleaning up the planet?

In this post we will be looking into various aspects of our lives and pointing out areas where we could make small changes which really can help to decrease our use of single-use plastic and disposable plastic products.

This blog post aims to be built up over time to cover the many situations we may find ourselves in, with the hope we can help you to make the decisions which could lead us to live a more plastic free life for the sake of our environment and for ourselves as part of that environment.

Below we are going to look at what a typical day in the life of someone who is striving to live as plastic-free as possible could be like in order to showcase products and spread new inventive ideas for living. By making various decisions along the way, by choosing to use more environmentally friendly products and by adjusting our lifestyles we just may be able to make our consumption of single-use plastic become a thing of the past…

Although we do recommend products which contain less plastic and are potentially less damaging to the environment, we would always advise people first and foremost to reuse or to make use of products which are already owned and still have a serviceable lifespan. Please don’t throw something away simply because there is now a greener product available! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are the golden rules to follow here…
